It’s already there!
On the morning of Friday 02 July 2021, my wife and I attended separate funerals. She attended the funeral of her former school-mate. He was quite well-established. He owned a number of mining business ventures including investments in Democratic Republic of Congo, among others.
On the other hand, I attended a funeral of our church member, a twenty-one year old young beautiful lady who was well into developing her own career from her studies at the University.
Sadly in both the above cases, the deceased had ended their own lives.
In our training as Coaches, we are urged to be reflective in our professional practice.
So the Coach in me has been reflecting on the above incidences, with lots of questions, trying to understand what could have led to the two persons ending their lives suddenly.
By social standards, one would say that the gentle-man and the young lady were successful.
The biggest question I have is: could there have been an alternative resolution to the issue(s) they faced differently?
The untold pain that their loved ones are going through is difficult to comprehend. But I also cannot shake off the feeling that there could have been another option, for either of them, to consider before making that fatal decision.
As a professional Coach I am bound by an ethical code of conduct. I am not in any way judging here. However, I am very concerned about the fact that there is a chance that both the young lady and gentle-man did not have a chance to have a candid conversation about the respective visions for their future.
Of course no one is to blame here. But the question still lingers for me: was this the only solution?
One of the clients that I previously had, was suicidal. Gratefully, we were able to embark on a journey through this phase. During our sessions, he was able to re-discover his desire to achieve. He renewed his commitment towards life and his goals.
That experience made me realize how powerful Coaching is. My biggest lesson, has always been the fact that the power lies within us. But many times we fail to recognize that, and look for solutions out there.
In his song entitled, ‘It’s already there’, Jonathan Butler sings:
It's already
there what you're looking for
It's already there, don't have to search anymore
Open your eyes, believe that it's true
It's already there inside of you
As a Coach, I have been trained to hold space for my clients to renew their zest for life and look to the future with hope. Therefore, it is possible to renew one’s desire to keep on living. And that could start by simply looking at the challenge or issue differently.
I don’t have details of the circumstances that led to the deaths of the two wonderful people. In fact I personally knew them. But that story does not have to be repeated. It is painful for those who have been left behind.
My desire has always been to see people around me doing better than their best. Coaching is giving me the platform to serve people from all walks of life, as we all strive to be our better selves.
In this time of the
pandemic, one cannot help but notice that that the death rate caused by COVID
is at an alarming rate. We all certainly face some form of anxiety and fear
about the future. But we cannot lose hope. Let us keep hope alive. It is inside
of you… it’s already there!

ReplyDeleteWe all need support at one point in our lives as individuals and professionally. Productivity and performance of organisations needs to be maintained, businesses require targets to be met to survive. At the heart of of all this are individuals who are bound to keep going with all the pressure that they face in a VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous) environment. As a Coach, it is my continued desire to serve individuals and organisations to navigate through all this and meet their desired goals.
During this month of July, I have sponsored 10 complementary Coaching vouchers. Book for your session (or refer someone) by sending email to: joe@meliuscoaching.co.za
I hurts to see people getting overpowered by fear and failures just because they don't feel comfortable to speak out. Your narration about two funeral touched me because they had something in common which is suicide to a young & old. This shows that depression doesn't chose age. I wish our people can take mental health issues seriously & thank you Mr Joe for taking about cases like this we need people like you to reach out to those in need

ReplyDeleteJoe this is a poignant reflection
Often people who terminate thier lives are deceived by thier circumstances. They think things may not change, lose hope and once hope is lost the worst is inevitable
