The Power of the Mirror

Every time you look in the mirror, you will see your face looking right back at you. The mirror is a great invention.

Stories from the olden days, are told about how colonialists presented mirrors as gifts to African Chiefs who would be so amused in wonderment about seeing their own images for the first time.

For some odd reason, in return, the Chiefs would permit the colonialists to take men and women and children away in slavery. But this is not a history lesson.

As a Coach I am always intrigued by the mirror both as a metaphor and a physical object.

In the song entitled: Man in the mirror, Michael Jackson sings:
“I'm starting with the man in the mirror
I'm asking him to change his ways.”

The mirror is fair. It simply reflects back, what is placed in its sight. The mirror simply replicates what is placed in front of it. It shows exactly what it sees and how it sees it!

“Mirror mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?”  So goes the famous line in the fable about the queen who was desperate to look beautiful?

But what has the mirror got to do with anything?

Well… it is a very powerful way that shows exactly how you are, and where you are (both physically and metaphorically speaking).

The question is: “do we use the mirror adequately enough to reflect on who we really are, where we are at?”

As a Coach in my journey with Clients, I hold up the mirror (metaphorically speaking) for us to see its reflection.

There is power in the mirror. It does not pretend. It does not lie. It does not conceal. It just exposes what it “sees”!

Perhaps the question one would ask themselves is: “what do you see when you look into the mirror?” Do you like what you see? In case you do not like what you see, what can you do you about you see in the mirror?

Have a candid conversation with yourself on what you see in mirror. You may be surprised at what comes up in that conversation. This is liberating.

We are empowered when we utilise effectively the power of the mirror.
