Leadership Is…?

I recently had the privilege of interacting with members of the Student Representative Council (SRC) from Tshwane North College (TNC) during a Leadership Training Workshop facilitated by Unity Actions.

These types of leadership workshops are organized by the College(s) to equip the Student Leaders with grounded knowledge and practical skills to fulfil their role of Student Governance effectively.

As usual in such settings, we get to discuss our individual understanding and the concept of Leadership in broad and specific terms.

Earlier this year, Ronnie Letshabo, an avid writer and author, published a book entitled: Leadership – the answer to everything. In that book, which is a master-piece for anyone who wants to venture in any kind of Leadership role, Ronnie has named each Chapter beginning with the title: Leadership is…

So during the SRC workshop, we inevitably had to define the concept of Leadership from a position of personal understanding. Hence we started our contributions in the discussions, by beginning with the sentence, Leadership is…

When Coaching Leaders, I encourage the Leaders to define Leadership from the way their individual understanding. This helps to demystify the concept of Leadership as something out there, some concept that someone out there has defined.

Personally, I would say Leadership is about everything concerning one’s life.

When observing people in various Leadership positions, it does not take long for one to get curious and ask the question: “What makes him/her a bad or good leader?” Scratching beyond the surface, one can begin to connect the dots between either the greatness or mediocrity of leaders. A lot has to do with how one carries oneself.

In fact during the Training Workshop my challenge to the TNC SRC Leadership was simple: The type of questions you ask yourself, will make or break the legacy of your leadership journey, even long after your term of office has ended.

At every layer of our society, beginning with the basic unit of the society – the family, there is need to apply principles of good leadership on a daily basis.

One does not have to wait until they are given a position of responsibility to be a good leader. Actually self-leadership is a basic requirement for anyone who wishes to improve on the status of their lives and achieve a desired life outcome.

In Coaching Leaders, I have had the opportunity to learn how great leaders make a daily commitment towards their individual lives and those whose lives they impact. This is both challenging and inspiring.

So how do you define Leadership in your own words?

In your experience, what would you say, beginning the sentence with, Leadership Is…?

  1. This is an excellent message about leadership. I see leadership in each person..compare it to a seed in everyone of us. The unleashing and releasing is the only process to be dealt with. Well done Joe
