The 24 Hour Rule

What do you do when you are deeply disappointed by a loss? How do you handle betrayal from someone you thought you trusted? How long do you celebrate a triumph?

Everyone has a way of dealing with the aftermath of incidences of this nature when they occur. Some ways can be destructive, even leading to depression. Other ways can be helpful in moving on, and staying the course towards a more desired or positive outcome.

After watching the Netflix Docuseries, entitled, “The Playbook: A Coach's Rules for Life” I got an interesting insight on how to move on after facing a loss, an undesirable situation or even a victory! The Series provide a fresh perspective with behind-the-scenes views from some of the biggest coaching names in athletics. The Coaches share the rules they live by to achieve success in sports and in life. The featured coaches include: Doc Rivers, Jill Ellis, José Mourinho, Patrick Mouratoglou, and Coach Dawn Staley.

The sub-title for the series: ‘A Coach’s Rules for Life’ is what caught my attention and kept me glued till I watched all the five series.

It is Coach Dawn Staley, who reveals the 24 Hour Rule. 24 hours from a win or a loss, you move on. After experiencing a loss from a match that meant a lot to her, while studying at University, she made-up this rule because she could see how much a loss would impact the players she coaches. Twenty-four hours gives the team time to “bask in your victory” or “agonize over the defeat.” And then we put one foot in front of the other and keep moving.

Wow, what an insight! After hearing those words, I said to myself: I could use this as a rule for my own life. After-all, if one looks at life like sport, rules can apply.

Now, I have adopted another rule that helps me in my personal and professional life to help me move on - after facing a disappointment or even a victorious moment. After 24 hours, I put one foot forward, and keep moving. No point in staying there.

Nelson Mandela aptly observes: “After climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb.” So you can’t stay there, whether in defeat, or in triumph. Keep moving!

Personal Development Coaching and Life Coaching helps us to find what actually works for us -  as individuals in moving forward, staying focused in the effort to achieve targets, dreams and goals. Focused and motivated individuals ultimately move Businesses and Organisations forward positively.

Hence, as a Coach, I find that adopting rules for life is helpful, just like the 24 Hour Rule.
