Looking back to Look Ahead

Remaining with the theme of the New Year reviews, I have been reflecting on the process of setting goals for the New Year. In fact the Citizen online newspaper had an interesting opinion piece about the struggle to stick to New Year resolutions. You can read the full article on: https://www.citizen.co.za/news/opinion/struggle-new-years-plan-january-2023/

Recently I also came across a meme that read: “Memories take us back, dreams take us forward”.

Each day, we have an opportunity to create great memories, through the work we do (service), and the people we inter-act with. While it is still early days of the month and the year 2023, as one looks back, an interesting question to ask oneself is; what memories did I create in 2022 that are worth remembering or going back to?

Looking ahead, one could also ponder on the question: What memories am I going to create that would be worth going back to, in the years to come?

Hence the inspired theme for today’s blog: Looking back to look ahead.

In song entitled ‘Buffalo Solider’ Bob Marley sings: “If you know your history, then you would know where you are coming from… ”. What a powerful insight. Given a chance, I would add to the lyrics a phrase to the above line that reads, … ‘and you would also know where you want to go.

There is power in looking back.

But one should not look back for too long; otherwise there is a risk of missing the right turns or moments on the journey ahead.

So, in preparing for the year ahead, among the many techniques one could use to set goals, by making a preview of the year, you are likely to identify what would work better for you going forward to reach your desired goal(s).

In the typical fashion of how a Coach would facilitate a conversation, allow me to pose a question: What would happen in 2023, if you tried looking back to look ahead?

    Answering the question ❓
Looking back to look forward, I would achieve most of my goals. Like getting an overseas publishing deal, buying my first car amongst other things.
