FOCUS
Earlier this week, I was having a conversation with colleagues on how far we have come in the business venture we are all involved with.
As we reflected on the progress made so far, and areas
where improvements can be made, the subject of focus came up.
This is in terms of achieving goals in a specific time
frame, despite competing demands.
Later on, as I personally reflected further it became
clear that this is something that I had neglected for a while, and could be the
very secret I need to have that edge. Wow!
Focus.
It has become a rare attribute in the way we do things
either personally or professionally. In fact one has to make such a conscious effort
just to focus.
When was the last time you spent an hour without
looking at your phone for emails, tweeter-feeds, instagrams, facebook,
news-feeds, you-tube videos, linked-In… and the list could go on and on?
Has social-media technology challenged us to the
extent that we are unable to actually focus?
Please don’t get me wrong. I am not in any way against
the technology. It is great. In fact it is one of the greatest inventions in
the history of man-kind. One is able to
access vast amounts information instantly. However, there is a time and place
for everything, especially when one talks about time-specific goals that one
has to achieve.
Focus is key.
In the book entitled, The Power of Focus (Tenth
Anniversary Edition) by Jack Canfield et al, there is a powerful statement that
says: “Time pressure, getting ahead
financially, job security, and the struggle to enjoy a healthy balanced
lifestyle still remain major challenges for millions of people. Our research
shows that a lack of focus is still one of the biggest factors causing these
hardships.”
In the hardships that you face today, could it be that
a lack of focus is factor?
In the book, Jim Tunney, a former NFL referee is also
quoted saying, “Your ability to focus is
the most important success skill you can ever develop.”
So I am encouraged that this skill
can be rekindled and revived especially in cases where one has not been
actively utilising it.
Allow me to ask a few questions in
this regard:
“Of
late, how often have you made the effort to focus on one thing until you have
the results that you desire?”
“What
are you going to do to focus on that which you need to focus and the get the
results that you are looking for?”
I find the acronym inspiring and
would like to implement it on a regular in the coming days. It says, Follow One
Course Until Successful: FOCUS.
Suzan Pule: stand as self efficient as possible, accumulate resources and training in as much as I need, grant myself the opportunity to work, learn and empower my business!
ReplyDeleteSuccessful people aren't great at everything, they are great at one thing and suck at everything else.If you focus on too many things, you won't be able to spend time on what makes you great.
ReplyDeleteI always make sure that I divide my work into manageable chunks with clean stopping points, seperate tasks by context and make clean breaks.
Thanks Jay for sharing. In fact studying people that we perceive as successful is a key ingredient in our own ability to be effective and succeed.
